A: Hi, B. I heard you’re looking for a new job.
B: Yeah. I just had an interview yesterday.
A: Oh. How did it go?
B: I think I did well. They said they would make a decision by this Friday.
A: This Friday? Looks like they want to hire the person as quickly as possible.
B: Yeah! I think so, too.
A: What are your chances of getting that job?
B: I believe I have a very good chance. The director seems to like me.
A: Well, good luck, then.
B: Thanks. I hope it helps.

A: So, how was your interview?
B: I haven’t gone to the interview yet.  It’s tomorrow.  I’m so nervous.
A: Don’t worry.  You should do fine.  You have the experience.
B: I hope so.
A: Remember, they want someone who works well with people.  You’ve got to show them how easy-going and personable you are!
B: Thanks.  I’ll keep that in mind.

A: What are the chances of getting a raise this year?
B: Chances are slim!
A: Wow! You haven’t gotten a raise for how many years now?
B: (Heave a sigh). It’s been three years! The company keeps losing money and they can’t afford to give anyone a raise.
A: That’s too bad. Did you ever think of working somewhere else?
B: Yeah. In fact, I have an interview next Monday.
A: Good luck!

A: Did you see May today?
B: Yes. But why does she have such a long face?
A: I don’t have the foggiest idea.
B: I thought she’d be happy.
A: Yeah, especially since she got a promotion recently.
B: Maybe it’s some kind of personal problem.

A: Did you hear that? The drought conditions are severe! There’s a lot of death, dying, and suffering out there!
B: I heard that, but it’s not surprising actually, ’cause we haven’t had as much rain as normal this year.
A: Well, if it could rain even a drop, things would be much better! And my flowers in the garden would come back in a heartbeat.
B: I guess you might have to quit watering your garden. I heard that they are going to start rationing water. In fact, this morning I happened to hear on the radio that the reservoir had dipped below half its capacity this month and the volume of water entering the reservoir is the smallest in fifty years.
A: Really! I thought that might happen. Great! There go my vegetables!
B: I guess so. But think about Africa.

A: I think a drought has set in. It hasn’t rained a drop for months.
B: I think so, too, but didn’t it rain last month?
A: It did rain last month, but the rainfall was only half the monthly average.
B: Oh. That bad?!
A: That’s right. It’s really bad. I’m really concerned though not panicked yet.
B: I don’t blame you. The pastures have browned out even before the summer hasn’t arrived.
A: Yeah, and the soil has been baked so hard that the plow can’t even break the soil.
B: Looks like it’s going to be an ongoing thing that would get worse each day.
A: Yeah. If it doesn’t rain, it’s going to get critical.

A: Wow, you look like a drowned rat! Didn’t you know there’s a thunderstorm today?
B: I knew there would be a shower, but I didn’t realize it would rain cats and dogs today.
A: Well, you’d better take a hot shower right now, or you’ll catch a cold.
B: I know. I don’t want to get sick, especially during finals week.

A: What’s going on? When you turn on the faucet, it’s just drip, drip, drip.
B: Well, it’s the second day in a row. I guess the pipes are frozen again.
A: Really?
B: Yeah. Yesterday the water even went off without a warning. I couldn’t take a shower, nor could I wash the dishes.
A: Well, I’m wondering why the maanger isn’t on top of this!

A: Oh, the heat is unbearable! Didn’t you turn on the air-conditioner?
B: The heat has blown our air-conditioner on the roof!
A: What the…! So, what are we going to do?
B: We’ve got to have it fixed as soon as possible. I’ve called someone and they’re on the way.
A: Thank God!
B: Here you go. You can use the electric fan here. At least you can catch a breeze.
